This year, for the first time, I have entered some of the exhibitions that go along with the Handweaver’s Guild of America’s (HGA) bi-annual conference, Convergence. This Convergence, in Knoxville TN, is the first one since 2018 because of COVID. https://weavespindye.org/convergence/
The reason I did this is all about tapestry and The American Tapestry Alliance unjuried show. In COVID, I started to learn tapestry. It is really fun for a scarf weaver to have so much freedom, have to give so much attention to detail, so many new skills to work on. I’ve taken several online classes, met wonderful people, and all in all it’s been great. So I entered a piece in their show-Tiny But Mighty. This is called Tiny Mountaiins. I’m trying out eccentric weaving. Think about it! An unjuried show, any weaver can enter. All run by volunteers. How wonderful. https://americantapestryalliance.org/exhibitions/unjuried-small-format-tapestry-exhibition/
After I decided to do that I looked at the emails about other shows at Convergence with new eyes, I applied to two and got into both!
When the Complex weavers show, “Complexity,” meant to spotlight innovation, opened July 1, I got an award! Wowie zowie! It’s the Treenwway Silks Award for Best Use of Silk. See Instagram for more. My prize is some silk from Treenway, https://www.treenwaysilks.com/index.php one of my favorite companies.
The next show is the HGA Fashion Show, Seasons of the Smokies, which will take place Friday evening, July 15. I have one of my favorite shawls entered there. It will be a fun event with a nice dinner, and I assume great models.
Goals for the year: enter more shows, write more posts. Teaser for more posts: loom issues, new loom coming, nerd out on amalgamation weaving and drafting, fall shows, and new work. I wish I wrote more, someday I will. In the meantime, check Instagram for what’s on my loom form time to time.
That Blocks and Echo Shawl is gorgeous, Muffy! I won’t be at the fashion show, so glad you posted this here! Kudos on all three!
Thanks Kennita, I hope everything went well for you at Convergence. Muffy
